my 79 f 250 will turn over briefly and then starter disengages. it happens every time i try it. cranks over 3 or 4 revolutions and disengages. would that be a motor or solenoid?
If the starter keeps turning after it disegages it is most likely the starter drive.
If the starter stops after it disengages could be the relay or the ignition switch or even a bad ground.

Which means to me the starter is still turning but the drive has disengaged from the flywheel. But I could be misunderstanding that is why I gave the answer I did
In that case it is most likely the starter drive. You can tear the starter apart and replace it or go the easier route of replacing the whole starter

ps
While you have the starter removed clean the mounting area to ensure a good ground for the new starter, and be sure and check the power wire that runs to the starter they do wear out
