I've got a Dell laptop with the Vista OS and my old desktop runs XP.
I would like to transfer files, Outlook Express info, documents, etc from the XP desktop to the Vista laptop and read about a Belkin Easy Transfer cable to do so. The reviews weren't so good. Is it better to just transfer files, docs, etc to a cd using Windows EasyTransfer?

Do you have a network setup?
You could just use a hub or router and transfer things over the network..
Don't waste money on that cable.. I have not had good luck with them.. I tried 2 different ones and they bomb out if data rate gets to high..
If you create a CD then at least you will have a backup of your files..
hey Russ try out vista first I have a dell that had vista not no more ...most people i talk to don't recommend vista on a lap top for many reasons... it works well on a pc just dont want to see you do it twice getting vista off my lap top and going with xp was the best thing that happened to my lap top!!
I have a Linksys router. So I could just use a cable between the two and transfer data?
I'll get some cd's today and back up all of my info prior to doing this... just in case!
Regarding Vista, I'll give it a try and see what happens. I know some users like it and some just hate it!
Thanks for the assistance, I'm not real computer savvy.
When both are plugged into the router they will be networked..
The easiest thing to do is to setup sharing if you know how..
Share the C: drive on the XP machine then on the Vista machine browse the network and when you find the XP machine you should be able to access all the files and copy and paste to the Vista machine..
I don't know how to set up sharing. I'll ask out IT guy if he can assist.
Thanks much Don and rep 2U!
Just goto My Computer...
RIGHT click on the C drive..
Select Sharing and security
Click the checkbox to share the folder on the network.
Enter a name for the share.. EXample: Old Drive
Check the box to let network users change my files.
The drive should now be shared and you can see it from the Vista machine..
Backing up to a CD is always a smart way to go! For one thing you have a copy of your files that you can store outside of you're computer. I personally use a external hard drive with USB connection as well as doing a CD backup weekly for all by important files. Unless you're saving a lot of pictures and such an 80 gig external HDD will work fine. They are cheap and easy to use. Plus you can stick it in you're pocket and read the files from any software compatible computer. Remember that if it is mechanical it will break sooner or later. I've had more than one computer crash that lost and/or corrupted my info. Networking is OK, but if the main computer goes down the info is stuck on its HDD and you are back to ground zero because you can't access it. Do a backup often!

Since you already have a router, just plug both computers into it and use the network setup wizard to set up a home network. This can be a bit confusing the first time around but you will quickly figure it out.
As donjamer already mentioned, once you have those two computers hooked together, transferring information between them is a piece of cake. You will wonder why you waited so long.
donjamer is right-that's the only pain free way that I have found. I have three different cables that don't do the job or need the Geek squad to use. Router was so simple.
We use Vista at home and we wonder why? Other than the nice interface we don't see anything improved over XP. Nothing like Microsoft said it was going to be. We use computers a lot at home and the 3 versions of Vista that different computers have is a pain because not all the features match-and there is no way we are going to send Microsoft tons of money to upgrade Vista just to get one or two features.
There, I feel better now.
Hope the network allows you to easily get files transferred. Back 'em up anyway if they are valuable or difficult to replace.
