Partitioning a laptop

Hey guys, I just bought a new laptop, and it didnt come with a floppy drive. So I was curious, how do you guys partition? Do you just use the same old windows 98 boot disk but install it on a cd or what? Thanks for any info in advance!

Most newer windows CD's are bootable, and part of the install procedure will prompt you about how to handle the partitions. Once windows is on, you can (depending on the version) do some disk management through the control panle/computer management. You can also buy a USB floppy drive if you must have one.

Haven't seen a version of Windows that allows you to partition a disk after the OS is installed on it (system disk). You can only modify other partitions or drives.

So a couple questions for you Preppy:
Is the Operating System already installed on the laptop?
Are you wanting to save the OS on the laptop, or install your own?

If the OS is already installed, you can get a program called Partition Magic
http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoffice/products/system_performance/pm80/index.html

If you are just going to replace the OS with your own, depending on the OS you are installing, it will ask if you'd like to format the harddrive, and should also provide options for adding a partition.

Good luck to ya

best way to do it is to use the disks that come with the laptop. put in the xp disk and choose full install and completely format and somewhere it will ask you what partition to use and then you delete all the ones you have then make 2 new ones

I did it on a desktop not too long ago, Installed windows and just partitioned it when it promted me, then installed linux on that partition. just make sure you install windows first cuz if any other OS is already on there, when you install windows it automatically deletes it.

No.... Windows wouldn't do that - that's decidedly user unfriendly, and we all know Microsoft is the most benign and user friendly software company.....

Or maybe NOT.

Well ranger, this is what I had in mind, My laptop does have xp home on it allreaddy, and two partitions, but I would like to get one partition so it only reads one hard drive, and then I want to install xp pro on it. I have been checking and I am going to try partition magic 8 and merge the two together, and that should solve my problem!

It should, as that is the only way to do it without wiping the entire drive (both partitions), reformatting, and then reloading the OS from scratch.
