Most of those old Stars had 15 speeds for some reason an 18 is some much better, and the 444 is a lot better engine than the 400. Looks like a great truck you got yourself a good truck.
I just use the 8 gears in my truck right now. I sure would like an 18 speed though. I love having the option to split whenever and wherever I want.
Colin I havent actually found out a whole lot about the engine, and I havent heard or read much about the 400 big cam either. Most of the info I have found was little tidbits here and there.
One cool thing is, it is supposedly the same internals as an n14, just the fuel system is a little different, and non computerized.
I have read for my engine I could get 600 horse out of it pretty easy too. Not that I need to, or would want to even, but its nice to know it has teh reliable potential for that.
Heres a link if your bored. They do have some 400 info on there too.
That looks like a damn good deal. Sheldon, have you driven much for 15 speeds before? With just a truck without trailer and that big engine, splitting the top gears wont be necessary. Neither will the deep reduction bottom five get used unless its soft ground and loaded heavy - just drive like a 10 speed!
Does it have a 'sticker' saying which transmission you have?
RT14615 - direct transmission with no overdrive
RTO14615 - overdrive but fourth and fifth gear positions reversed
RTX14615 - same as RTO but with fourth and fifth in normal positions
You may have a '14' or '15' series. The 14 will work behind an engine making 1400 ft-lbs of torque. The 15 is rated for 1500 ft-lbs.
Here is what I remember (using RTO14615)
R - roadranger transmission
T - twin countershaft design
O - overdrive
14 - the torque the transmission can handle. Some older ones were 9, some 12, then 14, 15, and higher now
6 - cant recall??
15 - number of forward gears
If I can recall, our tanden has a RTO12513 (13 speed o/d behind 1200 ft-lbs)
We had a few RTO15618 (18 speeds) and many RTO14613 (13 speeds).
Thanks Warren. No I havent driven much for 15 speeds, mostly 18, and a few 13's at work.
It doesnt have a sticker that I have seen that tells what kind of transmission it is, but you have provided some kickass info. Im gonna do some looking around tomorrow and see what I can find for numbers on it.
Ya just drive it like a 10 speed. Go through the first 5, pull the plunger and do the top 5. The deep reduction gears are the 5 lowest ones and they are goofy to explain but you wont need them much. You can go out of any deep reduction gear into the normal low range, just go in to one gear lower. If you go through all 5 deep reduction gears, shift into 4 on the low range. If in 4 DR go 3 low range, 3 DR go 2 low range, 2 DR go first low range.
Its just a normal low - the deep reduction gears are the 'low' ones. That would be a big split going from fifth in the low to seventh gear. When you do the split, go back to sixth position (left and down). You are doing the split between ranges like a 13 or 18 speed now.
