Needing to know if anyone has changed out there clock sping. I foung out the part is around 80.00 dollars but the dealer wants about 200.00 to install it. The only concern I have is the air bag system. If anyone has changed there's out please let me know. I really would hate the dealership 200.00
There's not much to it. It's much easier to work on than earlier NON-airbag columns, and it's pretty intuitive. The actual airbag connector has a shorting clip in it so it's automatically safe whenever it's unplugged.
Pull the 4 nuts from the back of the wheel and remove the airbag, then unplug it. Remove the bolt from the middle of the steering wheel and withdraw the clock spring connector from the wheel. Remove the screws holding the column covers together (one is REALLY hard to get to on the R side sorta INSIDE the dash) and remove the upper half. If it's an auto, just slide it up the shifter a little. Remove the screws that hold the lower half to the column and drop it. From there, you'll be able to see the clock spring assembly and the screws that attach it.

Steve83 thanks alot for the information. I have never messed with the steering before but it sounds like if I just pull those four screws that will allow me to disconnect the airbag system. Will I need a steering wheel puller or anything like that. Thanks for the information.
Please do not remove that air bag until you have disconnected the battery neg. cable for at least 1 minute. If it goes off in your face you can be seriously hurt. After it is out of the vehicle set it down with the bag facing up.
It's a coiled wire wrapped around the steering column that creates a continuous circuit for the airbag explosive. Older horn & cruise circuits use wiper contacts that aren't reliable enough for the airbag system.
