My son works at a garage and his lead mechanic said they could change out the gear in my 2000, 4.6 2WD to increase my fuel efficiency. He said I would lose my low end but I literally do no towing. They say they can do this for around $200.00. Is this for real and is it worth the $200.00?
probably not enough to be worth it. You could swap your gears out for better highway economy, but you'll do it at the expense of economy at the stop lights.
So, you'll lower your RPMs at freeway speed for better economy, but you can't get something for nothing, so your engine will work harder trying to get started from a stop. If you do the majority of your driving on the freeway with relatively few hills, you might be able to gain 3 or 4, maybe even 5 mpg, but don't expect this to be a magic bullet.
