Early 300 six (1965) Whats different?

Hi guys, I have a early 1965 F100 with a 240 six.
I would like to change it to a 300. I have a source for a rebuilt 300 crankshaft.
I have read and searched a lot of info on this, but my question is this:

What is different about the early sixes.
I have seen quite a few complete rebuild kits that cover 1968-1997, but nothing for 1965.
Just 1 example;

Should I just get a junkyard motor from a later truck/van?
Thanks for any help.

65-67 uses a different valve cover gasket, it's a totally different shape from later 300's and is not interchangeable.

Question?

What are you planning? Are you going to stick a 300 crank in your 240 block? If so, be aware that it would be advisable to use 300 rods and piston with the 300 crank. A lot more beefy to handle the extra torque!! I think the reason for so many 68 and up kits on the market is the emissions started in 68. Some vendors try to stay out of legal problems with selling pre 1968 non-emisson parts. I've found you can buy the pistons, rings, bearings, cam, etc. individually for pre 68 4.9's, but it is hard to find a complete rebuild kit. That's my two bits worth but good luck on you're project? I have a 66 SB with a 300 six-banger / 4 speed / 2WD that's a kick to cruise in.

What emissions parts were pre 1968? Depended on where you live.

In CA, we've had the PCV system since 1961, cars and some trucks (depending on the GVW), had smog pumps 1966/67.

What else? In CA...nothing.

No IMCO till 1968, no Evaporative Emission Control till 1970, no EGR valves till 1973, no catalytic converters till 1975.

I am aware the 66-67 352 ci had smog pumps but i wasn't aware the 240/300 had them in those years? Was that only CA? Whill we were discussing the 300 ci rotating mechanics I was considering the pre-68 internal component differences more so than PCV's.

CA: Smog pumps were installed on all the cars and some trucks beginning on 1/1/1966.

Dunno the emission requirements in other states, but the car and truck parts catalogs made no references to CA only inre to the pumps, so other states might have required them.

I stand corrected on the CA emissions issue. I've owned two 66's and a 67 with 300 L6 engines, and viewed a lot more, but I guess I never ran across a CA version cuz non of them had smog pumps. Must have been from a different state, I guess. To get back o the question "Why can't you find a kit for a 65 300?" Maybe they don't makem!

That would be I6 or I-6, as in INLINE 6, Not L6 or L-6, as in FLATHEAD-6, because of the L shape pattern of the Valve Arrangement in the Head.

I was thinking about this some more, and there are two wrist pin diameters for a 300-6, .912" and .975". this changed from .912 to .975 in 1969, IIRC.

Thanks for the help.
The 240 in my 1965 F100 was a little tired and if I was going to rebuild it I figured I might as well make it into a 300.
I had planned on buying a reconditioned crank, rods, harmonic balancer and a complete rebuild kit.
Would I also need to change the flywheel/clutch assy?
My concerns were if a 68-up crank would work in my early block.
I have been checking the local junkyards for Ford big 6s, but not much luck. Most junkyards in the northeast dont keep vehicles around very long.
Thanks again, Doug

Get crank and rods from a known year 300, and then buy a rebuild kit to match the year of the 300. this will get you the correct pistons and pins. then buy the valve cover gasket for the 65 and call it good.
