Not sure where the problem is but my truck is spitting ATF out of the power steering pump (area). Noticed it last night when I saw a spot of oil on the ground. Crawled under and there is ATF all over the pump, steering box, pitman arm, frame rail, wheel well and well, you get the idea. Started the truck to go to work this morning and the pump was howling like mad. Topped it off and went to work and all was cool. I stopped by the car wash today on the way home and washed as much of the ATF away as I could in an attempt to find the leak. Nothing conclusive as of yet.
Couple of questions.
How many hoses, two correct?
How hard is it to change the pump out? Anything special that I need to know?
I am going to pick up new hoses and a new pump and we will go from there. Is there a better PS pump than a stock Ford one? Maybe one designed for bigger tires? The local Ford dealer quoted me $115 for the pump, fleet pricing.
Well sucks to hear about that, but they aren't that hard to pull. Stop by the auto parts store, and but a Powersteering pump pulley puller and installer tool, it is like a c shaped tool that slides over the collar on the center of the pulley, and a bolt pushes it off. To install it there is a bolt you screw into the shaft, and then that pushes the pulley back on. Not hard to do. I'll dig through my resources later on and post up the flushing procedure.
Thanks Ron! The pump being out doesn't have me too stressed. Those things happen. The thing that has me stressed is all of that goo all over everything. You know how I am about keeping it clean.
Scott before you put the money down on a pump, have Susan turn the steering all the way to the left or right until the steering hits the stop.
The pressure will spike then and I'll bet you will find your leak coming out through the wall of the high pressure hose. It will spray everything like you are describing.
.
You might just only need to fix that hose.
If it does end up being the pump, here's one more thing to look for... I had to replace the one on my wife's Astro (that we no longer have, thankfully) and the replacement wouldn't fit correctly. Turned out the reservior was twisted about 30* on the pump housing. May or may not be an issue with the ones on our trucks, but it's a tip that might save someone another trip to the parts store...
Hope it's something easy, like the hose!! Good Luck...
