floor shift vs column shift? rare? optional?
Was reading one of my old truck mags, and it said that floor shifts in 1/2 tonnes were rare, as they usually went into the heavier trucks?
I have a 1951 Mercury M1 with the floor shift and have never really thought much about it until that article. Was it an option? Just a Mercury thing? Just curious...would be neat to see which of the two are in the trucks from the listers here...kind of a mini survey?

Maybe just use this as the survey then...lol.

I have had a few of the 1950 model, and all had the Floor Shift, I believe it was standard in these Trucks, and the Column Shift was an option.
Even in 51-52 you could get the Floor Shift although most were 4 Speed Trannys, with the Granny Gear.
I thought the same and that is that the Column never appeared until 1951, but was proven wrong, and then shortly after that I saw 3 of them with the Column Shift.
I believe that there was an Early 1950 , and a late 1950. I knew a guy who completly restored on 1950 and he done it to the 9's all the way and as a perfectionist.
I kind of mentioned it to a few friends at a showing of the Truck, that I can't imagine him going through all the expense of a total Resto, and putting on a Block Lettered Tail Gate.
It was correct, so you see there are a lot of items that appear on these Trucks that we just assume as correct.
I also had a 1950 Merc M-47, in fact it I believe is still on the Mercury Truck Site, its Light Green with Black Fenders, WWW 650.16 and Fog Lamps.
Anyway turns out that WWW Tires were an Option, as get this an Electric Shaver.
Also some 1950s had the smooth Side on the Bed, instead of the Stamped out one. the Stamped Steel Floor was in place until 1951, when they went to wood, and not the Shiney Oak or other Wood you see on some today, they were oil treated for longevity.
