Another oil ?

I was just at the dealer asking about a oil change. Priced out them to do and price of me doing it myself.
I notice on this site that most are running 40W oil. Dealer told me to ONLY RUN 10W-30W. The dealer didnt even have any other oil than 10-30 Motorcraft.
I checked around my town and there is nothing but noname diesel oils. Did find Shell Rotella T but they only had 1jug....go figure.

Does going with the heavier oil not harm the injectors on the 6.0L?

The 06 Superduty Workshop Manual calls for 15w-40 and just about everyone says use synthetic over traditional as it is a much cleaner oil. The link to the specs page from the Workshop Manual is: https://www.motorcraftservice.com/pu...20/S6OMAIN.HTM

Thanks guys,
Not sure why my dealership is using 10W30 then. They did the first oil change when I bought the truck. But I can see I will be doing them from now on.

If it gets real cold up there the dealer may suggest 10w-30 year round, but a synthetic 5w-40 would be better IMO.

I agree with you cartmanea,

The 5w40 syn would be a nice oil for year round service. Myself I stick with the 15w40 just cause I get the Motor Craft stuff at distributor pricing.

Remember to stick with a good quality oil filter like the Motor Craft so you dont have any issues.

I have a bunch of Mobil Delvac 15w-40 I got with rebates for $6/gallon, after that is used up I'll be switching to Rotella Syn 5w-40.

stick with 15w40-for warmer climates year round, or 5w40-syn in the northern areas were you see 95 in the summer, and -10 in the winter
i personally run Mobile Delvac 1 full synthetic 5w40

The manual does state 15W-40 until the temperature drops to 20 degrees (or 10 - can't recall right now), but in reality the 5W-40 is fine at all temps. IMO the main benefit of the 5W40 is that it is a full synthetic and has a higher maximum operating temperature.

And yes - if the oil gets too thick, it can cause issues with fuel injector performance (but a fresh 15W40 will not cause issues).

Since you are located up north where average temperatures are low, 10W-30 oil will work fine.

I am located in Connecticut. The dealer here recommends 10W-30 in the 6 cooler months and 15W-40 in the warmer 6 months. I followed their recommendation and send oil samples into Blackstone for analysis.

The 10W-30 oil gave slightly lower wear numbers than the heavier oil although all numbers were low.

Sometimes I think we worry too much about what oil we run in our diesel trucks.

Not to start another oil war, but 10w-30 is not good, you should not use it, and I still cant believe dealerships are putting this crap out.

Ill make it short. This engines blood is its oil, the fuel injectors are fired with the use of extremely high oil pressure. Doing this shears the oil down like crazy, which is not something that you want.

Ask yourself this, if they make multi-viscosity oils, and the number on the left, the lower one, is the one for "cold start up", why would you use a lower number (on the right) for the high range? Hell, some dealerships were saying to use 10w-30 year around (even in warm climates), please do tell, who is crazy, me or them?

If your dealer says use 10w-30 fine, they're crazy. Use a 5w-40 or even an 0w-40 if need be (yes its out there). Otherwise, especially if a lot of hard driving is going to see your truck and its filled up with 10w-30, i definitely wouldn't go farther than 3000 miles per change without getting a oil report done and keep your eye on it before you start extending your drain intervals to anywhere close to Ford's recommendations.
