Bullitt chase on mapquest

Love that movie! Thanks for the link!
But i have to admit, every time I see it, my first thought is, Chargers always were barges. My second thought, triggered when Bullitt has to back up fast and the rear wheel is hopping around, is what crappy suspensions those Mustangs had. But I'd give my eye teeth for a '67 fastback with a 302 and 4-speed! (PS, only an 18-wheeler makes more shifts than Bullitt)

The 302 engine was introduced spring 1968.
1965/73 Mustang's rear suspension was the usual live axle, 2 shock/leaf spring setup also used on Fairlanes/Falcons.
There were four Bullitt Mustangs supplied by FoMoCo thru S&C Ford of San Francisco. The whereabouts of any is unknown.
* The Hone 2 speed O/D (mounts on the front of the rear end), was installed in some 1965/68 Shelby's (by Carroll, not Ford). These were also installed in other Mustangs by Ford dealers.
There's a separate shift lever for this O/D, just to the left of the factory floor mounted lever.
The usual method: Shift the trans from 1st to 2nd, then shift into O/D, then follow the rest of the procedure: 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to 4th..
That's 4 shifts total, what Bullitt seems to do when he pulls out of that place where he spun out.
Actually it was only three shifts...watch the film closely...there are two camera shots from different angles...so the 1st to 2nd shift appears twice.
ALL the engine sounds were dubbed into the film. None were recorded as they happened. This is Hollywoodese SOP in most films.
Jump scene: Where Bullitt's car becomes airborne then touches down...look close at the undercarriage...smoke appears and parts are flying off. Bye bye oil pan.
This same scene appears three different times in the film. It was shot by multiple cameras from many different angles.
The giveaway: The same green VW Beetle appears in all three scenes.

I remember them saying something that Steve Mcqueen did the driving in all the close ups shots without telling the insurance companies first. It was something to that effect because they saw him wheel hop that sucker in reverse and said no way no more doing your own stunts haha
I love that movie.

Good luck finding a 1967 Mustang FB with a 302, cuz there wasn't one.

There is an interview with Bud Ekins (who did the famous motorcycle jump scene) about this scene, and if I remember correctly, both the Charger and the primary Mustang were actually automatic cars, the shifting was like you say, a total dub job.
Here's a great account of it that was in the mags a while ago:

tell me something bill , as we all know weird stuff does slip out due to 'em using current inventory , how weird is that one norm had , my buddy . 68 fastback no.s matching 289 { which he still has } four speed , deluxe {?} interior . i thought the 302 replaced the 289 in 68 so my best geuss is it was an early car and like i said used up current inventory before using the new . it was highland green w/ black interior and i think it even had a/c if i remember right .
