ok all you need to do is change bellhouseings and mounts with your buddy...correct me if i am wrong but dont those parts interchange from 73 to 77? just do a full swap...i love my 460 and would never go back to a 390....but then again i went from a stock 390 (with a 2 bbl) to a mild build 460 with a 4bbl.....still never go back. well maybe to a 428CJ cuz my dads got one of them in a 69 mach 1 and man tha is a good motor!
you people are lame...i am the only one who told him to go for the 460?

Hey Bubba Redbeard...before you start calling people in the forum Lame !! I suggest that you re-read my reply!!!
and Even tho I have to sgree a 390/460 swap is a walk in the park!! I do beieve "IF" you wernt so delf centered and read my post you would have seen that I mentioned the L&L mounts..and L&L headers....either i frame or Fenderwell....
So dont come in here on your High horse and thinking because its a FE room...that knowone else knows a damn thing about the 385 series motors!! Because you might end up getting your fealings hurt!!
And I also read up on the article about a Dana 61? what Fu*kin year did they build those ?? Dana 35 , Dana 44. Dana 60, and Dana 70? But I'am a dummy as I'll admit..but I have never heard of a Dana 61? But at least I admit it!!
irvine SoCal I should have known better!! "IF" you wanna talk 460 based builds? PM me...this doesnt need to be in this room anyway!!

Dana 61 is actually a pretty common rear axle. Not necessarily in Ford trucks, but in Ford and Dodge vans they were pretty popular.
The 61 uses an offset pinion that allows the use of low numeric gear sets (3.0ish stuff) since the pinion head gets so big on those gears. You can use 60 gears with the proper carrier, or a ring gear spacer on the 61 carrier.

But go with the 460 if you can come up with the $ you will be very happy and I would think much happier then you would be witht he 390...Theres no replacement for displacement!

when i said that no one told him to go for the 460 i was talking about the poll count. i do not know a lot about building motors but i have had both a 390 and a 460 and would never go back to a 390. and i am in the same boat as you are about the dana 61 i had never head about it before right now. oh i am sure that there are a lot of people that know about the 385 seires motors....and what does where i live mater? and anyways SoCal has some of the best car related stuff in the country!

If you would never go back to a 390 from a 460, then you must be rich because 460s at best are fuel hogs and at worse a nightmare.

well i am getting 10+ MPG and in a tow rig that works for me i run it on 87 octane and have all the power i would ever need...and when i want something wiht power i am not to woried about fuel usage i need it to have power....and a nightmare well i dont know what happened to you to make you say that but i have never had any problems with mine....but hey if you like the 390 then more power to you!

I also get right at 10 mpg not towing with my 460 carbed, recurved dist., 4" single exhaust, a C-6 and unfortunately with 4.10 rearend. While the 390 gets 13 to 15 and is hat rodded quite abit. The 390 has GT heads, 2 1/2" duals, GT intake and carb, reworked with dual stage power valve and rejetted, aftermarket "RV' cam, a C-6 and a 3.73 rearend. Oh yeah and all this with keeping the speed to 55 to 58 mph with both trucks.
