I have tried the "home brew" removal tools many times with no luck... I spent the $3 on them at Walmart and couldn't be happier.
As has been mentioned, any car audio place or Wally World will have the wiring pigtails and removal tools.
go to your gallery, under the pic there is an option to click on [Forum Codes - For displaying image in forum posts] click on that option and copy the code and past it into a thread and it'll display, hope this makes sence.

Shameless plug for Crutchfield.com but when I bought my headunit recently, they included free shipping, harness adapter, removal tool and detailed instructions. Now, I'm looking for a decent sub that won't break the bank.
Purchased the removal tools a while back and have tried numerous times to pull the radio to get at the 'VSM' to replace it. Have been unable to get the radio to move. Is there some special trick? Really would like to remove it without any damage.
you can also use some allen wrenches to pull the radio. i had the ones with the little ***** at the end, and they just snapped in those holes it took a little finagulling, but it came out. i went to best buy and got the head unit, the adapter, and the plastic piece that the radio sets in.

Insert the tools on each side, you'll hear a click, spread the tools outward and the radio should slide out.

Follow Chris's advice , he's right on. The problem I had was pushing the tool in to far. Only has to go in about a 1/4 inch or so. This is apparent AFTER you have the radio out.
