Floor Jack Repair.

I have a Kobalt 3 ton floor jack. We ran into a problem with it not holding so we got the book out and followed the directions about changing the hydraulic fluid. But it never said how to bleed it which it says to do. My son and I spent almost 3 hours cycling it to full extension and then removing the cap afterward and we still can't get it to hold any weight. Are we doing something wrong?

Sorry for a long post.

I doubt you're doing anything wrong. That's pretty much the correct way to bleed a hydraulic jack. Assuming there are no external oil leaks it sounds like either the seals on the pump or lift cylinder are leaking internally or, more likely, the lowering valve is not seating completely. If you have a parts diagram you could try removing the internal valve parts but probably the best way to go is a new jack. How old is it?

It's about 4-5 years old. I guess you are right easier to buy a new one. I hate spending money if I can fix it. .

Hey Cliff, I know what your going through, sounds like an internal problem. I'm struggling with a H-W 1 1/2 ton floor jack (it's only over 40 yrs old) leaking externally. Finally found a seal kit ($70) if nothing else is worn. I'll try to repair it.

Take the valve out, leave the ball in & tap it with a brass punch a few times. That will usually reseat them.
