Well, since the gas prices have somewhat put a burden on how often we drive out slicks, I have come up with a low price alternative for an overdrive setup. While I was rebuilding a 390 for my 1966 F100 that had a 352/NP435/Dana 60.2 3.54:1 ratio setup, I went out and grabbed a T19 out of a mid 80's diesel 2x4 truck that had the 5.11 first gear and a 9 inch rear end for aother slick. I rebuilt the rear end with 2.75 gears and a trac-loc. Now it's set up for a first gear "take-off". With the new "built" 390, this thing hauls a$$. At 65 mph, I'm at about 2000 rpm with 29" tires. The really cool thing is that everything is bolt on; no adapters are included. Just a little idea that should get minds going. I'll post pictures soon!
I'd be interested in seeing your mileage results posted here...that where the rubber meets the road....
I've often wanted to get a hold of a 5 speed for my 66 F250/352/NP435/Dana4:10..not a 5spd out of a F600..those things are beasts... I had one...tough as nails a beeotch to shift...
By going to a taller rear end and a 5 speed...maybe bumping up HP a bit with 4bbl and a mild cam.....it just naturally follows that mpg would go up...well that's my thinking..
What say you?

Yeah, first gear is syncronized. I havn't recorded my mileage yet as the engine is still being broke in. But the idea of just using parts in the junkyard and raising the gear ratio in the back is just as effective and cheaper than going with aftermarket stuff. With your five speed, you would have a pretty good gear spread, but the lowest gear ratio you could go with a dana would be 3.54:1.
Okey doke...you know it's gone around at least once on the site..since I signed on..that is what people are getting mileage wise and all.....but I'm very interested in what the outcome is going to be on your mileage given the simple (seems like) changes you've made.. I reckon you won't have the engine broke in tomorrow or even next week...but if you could furnish some kind of results...
