Quick coil question.....

Is the coil grounded through the mounting bracket or is it grounded through it's wiring to the distributor? i've had so many conflicting opinions on this so i need bear or one of you other gurus to chime in please, my thinking is it's grounded simply by means of it's wiring to the dizzy but others tell me i need to sand off the coil paint to make a good ground? which is correct? thanks in advance......

Hello,

Let me introduce myself. I am "The Tek At Large" I am an old retired fart living in the Pacific Northwest. I am a Ford owner/builder/slave/banker/etc.
I have over 45 years exp as a mechanic. I also have an engineering degree in commercial Avionics. My specialty was Airborne Weather Radar systems.
Besides all the BS above I am a mellow general all around good guy.

I don't know if you could cal me a guru or not but here is a 99 cent explanation. Imagine the coil as a single long coiled wire. One end gets +12 Vdc from the ignition switch and the points are on the other end. when the points open no current flows. When the points close they cause the current in that long wire (which happens to be in a coil) to flow causing the coil to create a magnetic field. Inside the coil housing is the primary coil and a secondary coil wound alongside and insulated from the primary When the points open the magnetic field collapses and causes the voltage to be induced in the secondary and gives you that nice big fat spark.

Now the coil casing has nothing to do with the ignition process except to supply a electromagnetic shield around the coil to reduce electromagnetic interference.
You can ground the case if you want or sand the paint but I only go that drastic if I am trying to eliminate ignition noise.
