My '00 Navigator has the 5.4 32 valve engine and runs strong, premium fuel is not needed and I just got back from a short 450 mile trip towing a 7,000 lb. trailer with no problems. Cruising at 70 mph with cruise control on and averaged abour 14.5 mpg on the lie-o-meter.

yeah, the Nav had the 32 valve heads while the Expy of the same year had the 16v. I would love to get my hands on a 32v but don't want to put the $$$ out for the Nav or for a newer Expy.
152,000 miles on my 2004 EB w/LS - no major problems other than hub/bearings (which are are simple DIY). Mileage is 14.5 to 15 around town and 17 highway. Original plugs and coils. The late-in-the year production units seem to have the fewest problems.
With regards to the 24V engine, I though the early versions of those had the spark plug blowing out issue? Be careful of that problem. While I too would like the airflow characteristics of the 24V head, I count my blessings that I have never experimented with helicoil kits!
I have an 03 Expy and the only problem I've had is it stalled out on me once. I replaced the PCV valve and it still running like new. 94k no problems other than that.
