I have a small antifreeze leak that is on the right bank of the engine, towards the back on the engine. I am worried because yesterday I was checking my oil and I filled it, when i took the cap off, I got horrible white sludge in the cap and around the neck. It never had this before which leads me to believe I have either a intake manifold leak or a bad head gasket. I know this sludge could also be cause by short trips and condensation, but it never happened before and it seem like it is cause by the coolant leaking into the oil somewhere because right when I noticed the leak the sludge was there.
Before I go and start to take it all apart I am going to put some dye in the antifreeze and see if I can pinpoint the leak. They do make some head gasket/ intake manifold gasket repair. It is made by Bars Leaks, and I have seen many good things about it. I am probably going to try that first and see if that works. My main question was has anyone else had a similar problem with a leak near the back of the right bank of the engine.
My truck is a 2000 Expedition XLT 5.4, with about 86,000 miles.
that is where the head gasket always leaks, I had mine leaking oil there for awhile I ignored it until it started leaking coolant too, there is a tsb for an updated head gasket
Thanks for the reply, I found the tsb and now going to fix it. I am going to try Bars Leaks Head gasket fix, I have nothing to loose and its only around 20 bucks I think, alot eaiser than pulling the head lol.
I was just thinking about this but the bars leak will take care of the coolant leak (maybe) however your still going to have an oil leak so don't forget about that, not trying to change your mind about the bars just adding more info
I just put in the in complete block sealer along with some new coolant. It is the one where I don't have to drain it. I chose this one since I am not 100% sure where the leak is and I didn't want to have to drain the coolant out again. The directions said it has to be poured into a radiator hose if the is now way to access the radiator. I removed the hose on the top right of the radiator. I will let you know if it works. I seemed like it is doing the job because I don’t see any small puddles under my truck but we will see in the long run. It was only $8 for the bottle, not bad in my opinion, a lot better then having to pull the head or intake. Also as "Fordtech" said that I will still have a oil leak, I could not find any oil leaks anywhere but I am still changing my oil for piece of mind.
