transmission grind

my truck seems to grind in 2nd and 3rd gear on a hard upshift it also seems to grind on 3rd and 2nd down shift just being easy with it could this be a dual mass fly wheel problem or just a shot tranny the truck is a 97 f 250 4x4 5 spd

How many miles on your truck? Not sure about the Flywheel but you might want to try royal purple ATF and take up any slack you might have in your clutch. Helped me with the same problems.

sounds like syncros are getting worn, try upgrading to a better tranny fluid to buy some time. they should have synthetic mercon in them but i like the "ford full synthetic manual transmission fluid"

I am still dying to know exactly how syncros work and have found very little online. Anyone have good info on this?

I fear my snyc's are going to especially my 5th gear.

I wish these trannies were snychroless. It would be one less thing to go wrong.

The snyc's allow you to put it into gear without having the engine and transmission speed at the same speed. As I take it, the snychro will speed up or down as you put it into gear. I'm sure there is more to this...

Thanks Farm. The syncros are probably responsible for that funny noise I get when I occasionally downshift a little too soon too. It kind of sounds like Curly from the Three Stooges, Ya know like we we we we we.......

the truck has 210k on it and anyone know what a tranny cost

i kind of have the same problem but mine grinds down shifting in to 2nd and 1st, it mostly dose it when its cold and if i do it really slow it wont grind. and mine has 360k kms.
