[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-14-03 AT 12:12 PM (EST)]I wonder if synthetic tranny fluid would help. On my Mazda 5 speed, I generally have to shift slowly when it is cold, holding the lever against the slot until it sort of slides in, else it will chunk a bit (I do run synthetic ATF). Maybe just the way it is with Mazdas. But the ZF is a tougher tranny. Does your tranny run ATF or gear oil? I switched my '84 F150 4 speed to 10w40 motor oil and it was much easier shifting in cold weather.

Did you try the tranny forum? Only other thing I can suggest is maybe the clutch is getting pretty far along and that when cold it is not releasing fully and thus continues to turn the input shaft producing the grinding. What happens if you depress the clutch pedal and count to three, then shift. If it doesn't grind then, I would suspect a slight drag that is finally overcome by the friction within the tranny.
The clutch is good i just had my tranny out and changes the slave cylinder. i can count to ten and it will still grind. but when it does start to work proprerly it shifts very well.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-15-03 AT 06:45 PM (EST)]Do you have too much oil in the case? That would drag down rotating parts until of course the oil heats and starts to thin. Just a thought. Also check that the slave cylinder is not pushing air. It may need a bleeding.
if those were the problems wouldnt it do it in every gear?
