Wow, big taboo! I remember people saying you might have to get into major work if you cant fish the piston out of the hole it fell into! Can you see it in the hole? I would not worry about a filter housing at this point. If it worked its way down to the oil pan it MIGHT be possible to get it out from the where the dipstick tube goes into the pan. Maybe pull it over to the hole in the side of the pan with a magnet.

This happened to someone else here not too long ago Try doing a search on it you may find the post.

I think his dropped to the oil pan and he put a magnet on the pan to prevent it from rolling around put the new fuel pump in and is driving it like that.

if you cant fish it out of the oil pan then you may have to if you want it out of the pan. you may be able to get it out of the dipstick adapter hole

Not looking to freak you out any more but yea I think a big chunk of metal like that could be a engine killer. I would be freaking too. Would not even think of running it with it in there. Sorry bro sure thats not going to help you sleep any better tonight but I don't want to see you lose your truck either. Wish I could help you out some more.

this is why you should hand crank it so the cam lobe is at it's peel and it would have lifted the pump up off out of it's see so that you could slip a finger down in there to apply side preasure and remove it no problem. Hinesight is always 20/20. I read up alot on here before I tackled that job. Sorry to hear about your luck. 50/50 chance you're ok...but righfully your should be paranoid, best of luck to ya!

Jim, calm down. This can be handled. First drain the oil. Then get a bad *** magnet and run it all over the pan and see if it hasn't already hit the pan. If not, crank it by hand. I believe you can do this easily by spinning the motor backwards with your ratchet on the alternator. I think. That's how I set valves on a cummins. Either way, crank bolt or alt bolt, spin it. Listen for the clank. Once it's in the pan, then work on getting it out. The oil dipstick hole is your only hope. But like mentioned before, once it's there, it won't contact the crank if it's in the sump. And a magnet will keep it there till you choose other wise. But don't get too nervous, yes it's a motor killer, but not if you keep your cool. Think about it, IIRC it's a straight shot to the crank and rods once it passes the cam. This plunger and all the rotating assembly are pretty blunt. So I would say if you spin the motor over slowly, it shouldn't get hung. The rods should just push it around till it hits the pan. But this is just my opinion. Good luck man.

I would drain the oil like Cody said then hit the bottom of the oil pan with your hand or a mallet. If that baby is in the bottom it will bounce. If its not then you need to turn the engine over by hand like Cody said until it gets down there. As long as it below the windage tray (in the lowest part of the pan) it won't hit anything but at that point you have two options. One is to use a really strong magnet to keep it in place or two is to fish it out via the dip stick adapter or a hole you cut in the side of the pan then weld and seal back up.

If you try the dip stick adapter you might drop that as well and still need to put a hole in the side of the pan. if your pan is leaking or rusty I would just pull the engine and do the whole works but if not I would fish it out.
