Fix What? Soot in the tailpipe DOES NOT mean theres something wrong. Smoke out of the tailpipe means theres something wrong. Theres been a lot of dealers that have had the cost of dpfs charged back to them for replacing them unnecessarily. When you replace something under warranty, you have to send it back to ford for their engineers to inspect. Again, if it aint smoking, it aint broke! If we started that, we'd have "my buddies truck gets 15 mpg, mine gets 14, I demand you fix it!". If it doesn't show insufficient backpressure, if it doesnt show fuel leaks, if the oil level is ok, if its running ok with plenty of power.......What do you fix? Do you randomly start changing parts?
Obviously something is wrong if almost everyone else has completely clean tail pipes, and people that have had sooty tail pipes change the DPF's out and cleaned the tail pipe, and they never got sooty again. When ford themselves had demo videos of them wiping a cloth in the exhaust pipe of a 6.4 to show how there was no shoot, I'm pretty sure that points to something being wrong. Just because you can't see the smoke doesn't mean its not making any.
The DPF literature says that 93% or better of "soot emission " should be burned off in the regen process. My tail pipe was filled with thick black soot and since replacement has been completely soot free. That means when I run my finder inside the tail pipe it does not have any black on it at all. if "it aint smoken it aint broke " is not entirely correct. What most likely is correct is that Ford or the dealerships are not training their diesel tech's in the proper procedures to diagnose DPF problems.
I have 5000 miles on my 6.4 and there are no signs of soot yet. Though now i am scared after reading this. My question is that a few responses back someone said that this engine will not meet the 2010 requirements. Is this true? If so then what do i do with my truck in 2 years?

No your truck will not meet 2010 emissions, just like my 7.3 or the 6.0's won't meet 2008 emissions. The requirements are for vehicles manufactured in 2010 or later.
Your truck will be fine with no modifications or upgrades required.
So does this mean that i must smog my truck later? If not then why not get rid of the dpf? I thought that it was for trucks manufactured after jan 1 2007.
My truck has 900 miles on it, tail pipes are dark, not completely black, but definitely soot. I have NEVER seen a regen. Its a job#3 so the message center should tell me its in regen. I have watched for signs of a regen, watched the message center, etc, and have not seen any sign of a regen. 90% of my driving is towing so I thought the EGT's were high enough to keep it clean but now that I am seeing soot in the tailpipe and still no regen I have to wonder.
The emissions standards compliance rules are no different. Your truck just has to meet the emissions of the year it was made. So as long as your truck meets 08 emissions, your golden.
Ok well i have been watching my exhaust smoke and it seems to be getting worse the computer says 14.9 and im getting around 14.5 to 15 by the old calc but the smoke jsut gets worse everyday and no regens so all i can do is wait til it locks up and then get it fixed. Thanks guys peace out
