alright'y then, i have a 1987 F-250, w/ 6.9 diesel 4X4, it started to get hard to start, and when it would it would run for 10 sec, then die, after turning it over for a while eventually it would start again....well i've replaced the batterys and now it turns over real slow... i was told the starter is dragging and i need a new one..ouch, there like 200 bucks, does any one have experience rebuilding these thing's or a suggestion...200 on top of a new transfer case and everything else...soon i'm gonna have ta start eatin' CAT FOOD......THANKS

Well, this means it is not starter related. It is glow plug/warm/cold fuel related. I have never worked on 6.9L engines, just tractors (trailer). What it sounds like is that the glow plugs are being properly heated, the truck starts, then dies because the fuel/air combo is too cold to support combustion.
On your truck there is probably a relay turning off too early (or not coming on at all after the glow plugs do their work) that is suppose to keep the fuel, glow plugs, or air hot until the engine warms up. I would bet if you plugged in your block heater the truck might run longer until it got hot enough on its own (engine speed 1250 rpms for five minutes) to support combustion.
