Front Brakes and Jacking

Hi there. I'm new to this forum and need some advice or pointers. It's been longer than you want to know since I have replaced brakes, either drum or disk, but with the price of things these days I decided to go back to some DIY where able.

Regardless, my wife has an '02 Explorer XLT and I need to replace the front pads. Several questions:
  • Where's the best location to place the jack stands?
  • Where should I lift from? I'm thinking I should lift from some central point and then set it on the stands rather than lifting from each side.
  • Are there any SPECIAL tools required? I have just about anything one might need, both standard and metric.
  • Are there any gotchas that I should be looking for?
Thanks.

there is a crossmember under the engine. jack there then put your stands behind each tire on the frame. Not the suspension, but the frame. if the caliper has 2 pistons just use your old brake pad and a c clamp to push them in at the same time. pretty simple job.

wire brush everything when you get it apart. the main problem with brake jobs is the brakes "stick" or drag afterward. the slides need to be cleaned, the hydraulic piston needs to be pushed in with a c-clamp and run in and out a cople times. the grooves the pads set in need to be cleaned and a little antisieze applied to all moving points. not difficult to just remove the two bolts and pull the piston and pad holder off, i like to remove the caliper holder, then pull the disc off also. it should be wire brushed and the crud removed at the contact edge whee the pad rides. the new pads might not set exactly the same spot. the cleaner you get the parts and more time you spend on getting the rusty buildup off and then making sure the caliper slides on the two pins, the better job you will get.

When putting the wheels back on, hand torgue the lugs to the correct spec. Don't go crazy with an impact gun as overtightening can cause warped rotors.

Thanks. It turned out to be a straightforward project, once I got the lug nuts loose.

The gorillas who last swapped our winter/summer tires must have had an air gun set at it's highest setting. I even bent a breaker bar trying to get them off after only being able to loosen five of the ten with the two air guns I tried using.
