Growling
I have a 1999 Explorer v6 with 113,000 miles. At 40mph theres a growling noise coming from somewhere.I replaced the complete rear end 2,000 miles ago due to a worn out r&p with a used one with 68,000 miles we took it a part to check it out and everything seamed fine. I cant tell if its the front or rear making the noise it only makes it around 40. Any ideas?

jack the truck up and spin each wheel. the most likely culprit is the wheel bearings. i had the same problem on my sisters 96 XLT V6 4X4. and of course it happened right after i put breaks on it so she assumed i screwed up (yea right). the front wheels were covered in a fine powder of metal and both front wheel bearings were shot. they were pretty easy to change on the 4x4. unplug the wheel speed sensor, remove 4 bolts and the whole assembly slides off, and the new one slides right back on. i didn't have a problem with the rears though. but every early (92-99) explorer with a growling noise that ive seen has been the front wheel bearings. hope this helps!
