Any guesses on what it should cost to have my rear main seal replaced on a 2002 power stroke diesel? I don't want to get ripped off too bad. Also, now it seems to have leaked oil onto the flywheel, and the clutch is starting to slip, so I have to have the flywheel surfaced and probably a new clutch.
Welcome to FTE. As mentioned, the most common leaks we see on these motors come from the top of the engine in the valley (between the 2 heads) and drip down the back of the motor to look like a rear main seal leak. It usually winds up being an O-ring that you can buy and replace yourself for less than $5.
First off grab you a flashlight and look on top of the motor for any signs of pooling fluid. Tell us if it's in the front, middle or back of the motor, and how big the drip is. Second, verify it is oil and not diesel that has picked up sludge from on top of the motor to look like oil. The slipping clutch sounds more like a diesel fuel leak. That fix will cost you 2 o-rings that cost about 65 cents a piece.
Give us some more info and we'll help you get it fixed up. Also, if you scroll a little further down the forum listing you'll find a section specific to the 99 - 03 7.3 motor. Stop by and do some reading and ask any motor specific questions there. There's lots of knowledge here.
Wow. Am I glad I came here first. Thanks guys. I'll take a look in the morning. I know it's not diesel, though, since I'm dumping massive quantities of motor oil in on a regular basis. I'll let you know what I find.
Ok, I climbed up into the engine compartment this morning, and there is a puddle of oil sitting in the front part of the valley, just under the fuel filter canister. Looks like I may have hit pay dirt.
Leaking in front sounds like it will either be the oil lines or end plug on the HPOP (high pressure oil pump). I'll give you a link to another thread that was having the same issues. There is a picture of the HPOP out of a truck in there so you can get an idea of what you're dealing with, a picture of a $2 quick disconnect tool in case you need to change the o-rings there and don't want to spend the $70 to buy Fords tool, and a link on how to fix the end plug leak if that's the issue.
Once you read through that thread, you just need to narrow down which spot your leak is coming from, unless you want to address both issues at once.
Let us know if you have any questions along the way.
