I just did a flush and fill on my 87 Bronco 2 4x4 and ever since the temp gauge has red hot. I want to check and replace it if need be but where is it located on the block?
On a carburated a small block like a 5.0 or 5.8, the sending unit is screwed into the intake manifold between the distributor and right valve cover as you look at the engine. On a fuel injected engine it may be in a different location, but it is probably still on the intake manifold. It should be a 1/2" threaded plug with a single wire going to it.
Given what you said about running hot right after the cooling system flush though: First recheck the coolant level in the radiator. When the cooling system is completly drained a lot of air will be trapped in the block until the thermostat opens. Then the coolant in the radiator will displace the air from the block, but the radiator level will now be low and the engine can overheat.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 16-Nov-02 AT 01:21 AM (EST)] Still could be the sending unit, seen them before internally "screwed"
Although I dont know where the sending unit is on a 302EFI version

ps
After you locate the sending unit...disconnect the wire on it and while making sure it doesnt touch anything turn the key on. If the guage still pegs it is most likely the wire ...if it stays at cold the sending unit is toast.
