It came with the factory remote door lock system. The problem is this. I always start the truck for a short warmup period. I start the truck with the key and lock the door with the button on the door. When I come back out of the house later, the remote will not open the door! I searched through the manual and it tells me its supposed to be like this. The remote system will not work with the key in the "on" position. I then have to use a second key to get in.
Is there a way to work around this? I would prefer to only carry one key around with me. Is the receiver for the remote system a seperate unit? If so, could one just remove the wire that tells the receiver that the ignition is indeed on? If the receiver is built into another module, is there another option?
I asked the service manager at my dealership about it and he said that's just the way it is. I asked for a rationale behind the design and he came up blank again. Personally I don't see why you would want the remote door locks to not function if the vehicle is on.

The remote entry module is directly in the middle of the truck on the firewall up high almost near the top of the dash. You'll have to remove almost every piece of dash to get to it. It's a small black box about eight inches wide and two inches deep and two inches high. It will have multiple wires coming in on two or three connectors. You can help locate it by locking and unlocking your doors. You'll hear the relays clicking in it. I'm installing an aftermarket security/keyless entry/remote starter system. You should be able to find which wire is the "ignition on" wire and snip it. I'm not sure how intelligent the factory system is but it may be some kind of data level communication that tells the system that the engine is running.
btw I'm totally ignoring my factory system (leaving it intact) and I wired my door lock/unlock interface to the same inputs that the door buttons use. It'll lock and unlock irregardless of the engine running. Sorry I don't have a wiring diagram but with a volt meter and a few hours time you should be able to accomplish the task at hand. -Jaseun
ps there are two nuts holding the system down to two firewall mounted studs. You'll need a deep socket to remove them. And some long arms too. Do you do Yoga? you will if you get that system removed :7
Thanks for the help. If its going to be that much work to get at the module, I think I'll just leave it alone. Maybe I'll get a remote start with door lock features instead. Then I wouldn't even have to go outside to start her up. Then if I ever sell the truck, for upgrade to a new one of course, the factory system will be intact. I wonder if the remote start would still trigger the factory remote to lock out? Looks like I have an excuse to get the remote start now!

PS - If you have to do yoga to get at it on the truck I would hate to imagine what you would have to do to get at the module in my wife's Focus!
In many (probably most) places it is illegal to leave a key in the ignition (open ignition) for obvious theft reasons. Ford is just trying to keep you from locking your keys in the vehicle but like most safety devices the human mind is ingenious enough to figure out how to override them and get in trouble.
R:E Remote Receiver - 2000 F-250
Does the receiver have a removable cap on it exposing some relays?
My problem is that neither of my remotes work on my keyless entry and are not reprograming.The dealership said that the receiver may be bad and that runs around 500.00. I can get the dash off and get to the receiver but i found what I think is the receiver and it has a removable cover with several relays in it. Could it be just a bad relay?
In response to afterburner's posts, I'm not aware of any specific wire you could unplug that would allow the remote keyless entry device to work with the engine running. Also, if you had a remote start system installed, the factory remote will not work any time the engine is running, and in many remote start systems, the remote starter's remote will only operate the door locks if the vehicle is running under remote start power. Furthermore, provided your vehicle is new enough (something like 2000 or later), you could install a keyless entry keypad which does function with the engine running.
Checkout some of the aftermarket remote starter sites. Like bulldogsecuity.com. The factory remote entry systems work just like the ones with the remote start, and I'm sure I've read about the things that must be disabled (and how to). It's also a great place to get a listing of which wire is which for just about any make model.
I added a Ford factory remote start system to my Ranger that already had remote locks. In addition to what has been noted above, I noticed that if I lock the vehicle with the lock button on the drivers (or passenger's) door and then exit the vehicle and wait at least 3 minutes, I cannot unlock the vehicle with my remote start key fob unless I start the truck using the remote first. The Ford dealer told me that its because the truck has 2 separate security systems and it cannot be fixed to let me unlock using my remote if I lock with the door button. I thought that was ODD!
As for a question maybe someone can help me with. I recently had the factory remote fobs (which still worked) stolen from my truck when it was broken into. Since the thief may find my vehicle again (because they have my address off the registration), I'd like to recode or disarm the factory remotes. Does anyone know how to do this?
