Actually, the one on the freewheeling trucks looks simular as well. Both have orange, with black accent lines, and letters.

I also believe that a simular panel could have been used on some of the 1979 Explorer special Limited editions as well.

And It had orange stripes.

Did the stripes look like this?...

I can't remember what the strips looked like but I think I remember them looking something like the ones in the second pic but not 100% sure. I don't think it was an explorer though.

If the stripes looked like the one in the picture I posted earlier, then yes it was an Explorer, cause only Explorers got that pin stripe.

There was also an accent stripe option, but it didn't look like the one on the Explorers.

Only way to tell for sure now would be to get a build sheet for the truck.

81 - If it is/was an Explorer wouldn't it have the name plate on the bedside? He could look to see if the holes were filled.

You can easily clean the orange paint off with some thinner and it will leave the panel with a chrome finish, if you're carefull you will not hurt the black paint in the letters. I've removed all the paint in the chrome trim on 2 of my 79's and it looks really good and would go well with your clear lights.

Nice truck. The clear lens look pretty cool. The orange tailgate panel does kinda stand out a bit, but it doesn't look bad. Just out of place for such a nice truck.

Good Point. It would also have a hole for the hood ornament.

As you say, they could have been filled.

then again, it may never have been an Explorer. Without seeing a before picture of the truck with original paint and stripe, it's very hard to tell exactly what it was.

Only a build sheet, or if there were some tell tale signs of the holes you and I mentioned, would tell for sure.

I don't think it was an explorer because its pretty much a base model truck no ac and vinly floors. The badge on the fender says f100 ranger so I don't really Know.I also really can't remember what the strips looked like before it was painted so they could have been different or either something that my uncle could have gotten put on there when he had it repainted about 10-15 yrs ago

The Explorer had 5 different levels.

Explorer Package "A" was pretty basic. Just pinstripes, bumper guards, RANGER XLT chrome trim, explorer nameplates and hood ornament, chrome grille, and special seat colors and fabric.

And your truck has/had four of the seven criteria to pose the question, is it/was it?

Explorer package "D" is where you got the really good stuff like Air conditioning and carpet etc...

Also the Explorer package could be added to Custom and Ranger Models, and Ranger Explorers are more comon than Custom Explorers.

Your truck is an enigma, but that's fine. As I said, only way to tell what it was, would be to get a build sheet and find out.

It's not really worth finding out for sure anyway in my opinion, unless you wanted to paint it back original or just curious.

There were 15 different styles of stripe kits available on 1973/79 F100/350's.

Most were model specific, some weren't.

Of those 15 different types, there were 117 variations!

Most had to do with the colors of the stripes, some had to do with the bed length.

And...it was a ROYAL PITA back then to figure out what stripe kit fit what, because most of the trucks didn't have the stripe code on the Certification Label like they did in the 1980's thru today.

And...it was not till late in 1977 that Ford even bothered to illustrate any of them the parts catalog!

This was also true in the cars parts catalogs thru 1979.
