Can any one help ? My 2004 f-350 will start just fine then the next day it will take 3 or 4 times to start.. I have had FORD look at it and they cannot find anything.. It doesnt matter the time of day or temp.
I would look at battery cables first. If the engine is not turning fast enough it could be hard to start. remember that your diesel will not fire the injeftors until HPOP oil pressure has bullt up to 500 psi or so. This takes 3 to 5 seconds of cranking. If your engine starts in this time period it is working as designed.
A dealer with a competent diesel technician should be able to figure this out quickly enough.
Have you done an oil change recently? If you had a non-OEM oil filter installed the truck might be slow to start. Some aftermarket filters are shorter than the Ford (Racor) units and will allow oil to drain out of the filter when the engine is turned off. On a subsequent startup the filter must fill before oil pressure gets high enough to allow the injectors to fire.
Filters are easy to replace and it is worth trying. After the new filter is installed try timing how long the engine needs to crank before it starts. My truck usually starts after about 3 seconds of continuous cranking. Compared to a gasoline engine the crank times are long, but the long crank time is a function of fuel system design.
