dude who cares about gas mileage anymore? its a freaking EXCURSION. V10 at that. i own one... gets probably 14 on the hwy and 11 in town. o well big deal. its the most comfortable rig that i can afford at this time. pulls whatever i can put behind it and has never left me stranded....all in all you pay a little in gas and get a lot in return. thats what i have to say about that!

WELL SAID ! Your post is the one that gets to the heart of the matter...and makes the most sense I've seen yet...! ( except for the guy with the idea of putting a tack on the gas pedal and driving bare-foot....! )
Hey, I didn't buy my EX for MPG I bought it for a safe and reliable tow vehicle and a daily drive around with a little more snot than any other (gas) SUV. (no offense smokers....)
When I pull out or over other vehicles move out of the way, because the EX is King. Long Live the King.......
PS my first fill up 8.01 mpg after a half a tank and the second is 9.27 mpg (hand calculated) around town and the first 10 mile 4000# tow to the lake and with (2) 100 mile trips on the highway.
And gas prices have fallin to $3.49 for reg 87 here in the Garden State.
i bought mine b/c a similar drivetrain mileage truck but with much lower trim level (xlt cloth etc) was 5 grand more on average... made absolutely no sense to get a truck.
the tripometer when I test drove it said 10mpg. when i picked it up from the dealer, it said 8.5mpg. I reset it, and for the first tank it got 13.5 mpg. Then I got the remote start remote from the dealership (forgot to give it to me) and now it's down to 12.5mpg from all the extra idling it seems, hehe.
resetting it every tank does seem to get the best the closest to hand calculated... but at the end of the day, who cares
I have a 96 F-250 4X4 Crewcab SB with the 460 V8 that gets 10 MPG. So I bought my Excursion to get better gas mileage. We got 13 MPG on the trip home and I was well pleased.
2002 Xcursion 5.4l Auto Tow package. 285/75/16 Tires 145K miles
We just returned from a round trip to Cali and back to NM.
We got 17.5 avg @ 75-80mph for the trip! We did not use the "LIE O METER"!
We filled up and drove, filled up and drove (Divided miles by gallons). I did the calculations and redid them to be sure. We actually pulled down 17.5 on the way there and 17.6 on way back.
Mods I have made to the truck.
K&N Filter in air box
Closed off bypass hole in airbox
3" flexible ducting ran to airbox, run it next to radiator
3" 90deg elbow connected to 3" pvc pipe ran to flexible ducting
Mounted where front license plate holder was
What I accomplished is a ram air duct to the airbox. ($20.00 total)
Replaced the "Cat" with a shorter, but better flowing 3" in/out unit. Still passes emissions!!!
