flex-a lite fan 16" eclectric puller

i got a flex-a-lite electric 16" 2500cfm fan on my truck it has a 460 and custom 4 core alluminum rad with 50/50 mix and when i stop at a red light in 95+degree days it will over heat because the fan shuts off and when the truck cools down the fan will come back on would. the relay do this or that breaker thing that comes with the wiring kits it says that if they get to hot they will shut off, the breaker that is but why does it do it and what do i need to do to fix it? i have always had problems with keeping this thing cool i had the rad built and it helpes alot but when i stop my motor wasnt pulling enough air through so thats why i got this fan and it seems like it got better but i had to mount the fan on one side of the rad because of room i only have 3 1/2" of room from the rad and pullies so what should i do take out the breaker?

I presume you are pulling the power straight from the battery. If not the wiring in these old trucks will not handle the electrical Load.

1. You need to confirm that power is staying on.

2. Then you need to confirm relay is wired correctly. Sounds like it is not right. Your on the wrong side of the relay. NC vs NO.

yes it is coming off the battery, the relay has 4 wires coming off of it 2 go to the fan 1 goes to the temp senser in intake and the other to a breaker thing that came with the kit then on the other side of the breaker it goes to battery. and now it wont come back on how can i tell if they are bad.

where does the power stop? Is the second relay an overload relay or is it a high amperage relay?

You could be running the battery below 12vdc, which is getting that fan setup real hot.

What kind of alternator do you have? 2500cfm probably draws a good 18amps continuous. Something an old 60amp alternator will not supply at idle.

i have a high amp alternator and the relay that has all the wires that came with the kit is a 30 amp relay it says and all it says about the other thing is its a breaker and its silver with 2 post on it and it says if it get to hot it will shut off im thinking about removing that and seein how it does but i went back out to nite and turned the key on and the fan did come on but the temp still SLOWY comes up past 180 it was still goin up with the fan on so i dont know what to do now. i mean it feels like this electric fan is moving alot more air then the fan that was on it so what does it take to keep these big blocks at the right temp. when im driving the temp comes back down.

it did with the old fan but not with this electric fan because it mounts to the rad.

At idle, without a shroud, you are only using about 1/3 of your radiator if you are lucky.

"but i went back out to nite and turned the key on and the fan did come on but the temp still SLOWY comes up past 180 it was still goin up with the fan on so i dont know what to do now."

I am sorry if I misunderstood you. I am trying to help.

If you do indeed have an overload relay, then your fan is drawing too much juice and tripping the relay, assuming the relay is functioning properly. Not having a shroud or having a shroud that is the same area as the fan, while drawing through 4 cores can easily put the fan under too much load.

You are spinning a prop through an air mass.

A shroud that envelopes the entire area will not only reduce the load on the fan but it will greatly increase the efficiency of the radiator. I'm talking about 3X at idle kind of increase.

I understand that you have a space requirement and it may be difficult to fit.

Please understand that i am a PERSON, not just some text appearing. I am using my TIME to try to help you. I think you'll find that if we work together we can solve this problem pretty easily. I also think you'll find that if you display zero appreciation for that help that i will promptly brush you off and stop helping.

Please be courteous.

Well, I'm glad that's past us.

I checked in your gallery and couldn't find a picture of your setup.

Are you able to take a photo so I could see the engine bay, preferably radiator and fan?

I have a 4800 cfm flex a lite on my 390, and it will sit and idle all day in 115 degree heat without the temp gauge going up. This fan is mounted inside the rad, and there was plenty of room after I got rid of the steel fan. I would go over those printed wiring diagrams that go with it, and check everything. My other question is: is a 2500cfm fan enough for a 460?

i went with an 18 inch 2 speed fan off a 96 t bird. bought a 180 & 1 adjustable thermostat. set the adjustable up to kick in the second stage at 200. has never hit it yet. the t bird fans are about 2500 cfm on low and 3800 on high. it really pulls the air and i have never had a heating issue since. ended up with about 125.00 in whole thing.
