Hi, what can i do to make an 8" resistant to 450lbs of torque and 400hp? Its a 408 335 series engine so it not a high revver, the peak torque occurs around 3500rpm and hp at 5000rpm.
I dont want to swich to a 9" rear, so help.. thanx
Your 8 will last for a while, but you should line up a 9 for this kind of power.
Even a 9 will break with this kind of power. You need to prevent wheel hop and axle wrap. Doing this will add to the life of the 8, but it will eventually break. If you're lucky, it will be internal, and won't send one of the wheels off into oncoming traffic, or the driveshaft spinning wildly into the back seat.
Alarmist? Yes. BUT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT 400 HP AND 400HP WILL BREAK PARTS AND KILL ANYTHING IN ITS WAY DOING IT.
So if you're going to play with 400 hp and you had the budget for that, man up and prepare the rest of the drivetrain to handle it before you risk destroying your vehicle OR WORSE.
Shelby put 9s under 2700 lb, 300 hp Mustangs. There is a reason.
jajajaj , i just thought i could rebuild the 8" without going for an 9" rear, but o heck illl just drive carefully till i get a 9", another thing will any 9" hold a 32 spine axle or some will hold 27 and some 32? and what mods do recomend me on a 9" to widstand my engine? thanx
jaja no I actually bought the ranchero in pieces for its 400, the 9" on it was too ruined to be used, the 408 is now in my 73 fast back mustang that came originally with a 302w.....
"All right baby, see what I´ve got right here in my hands, I´ve got it right in my hands to score you baby, I think im gonna yank on a one town! Look Out!"
What the heck does it mean to "yank on a one town"?

It means check your meds, and check the subject of the thread before posting.
JAJAJajaja WTF?! yeah man, anyways its Ted Nugent and some southern way of syaing he`s going to F!$$!$k or yank on his one town or place whatever he ment...its just sexual rock n roll - country music rubble, love his music though..
1972/79 Ranchero's came with 8 inch / 8.7 inch / 9 inch rear ends.
I'm curious, because even tho it was available...one doesn't see too many 8" rear ends in 1974 Ranchero's.
I'd expect to see either an 8.7 (integral) or a 9.
An 8.7 integral would have the bolts on the back right? only a 9" or 8" wont have any bolts on the back and comes out to the front, I found another 9" on a 74 ranchero that had a 460, well it should be a 9" it looks fairly bigger than my 8" and it has no bolts in the back, anyways do you know what stock ratio came with the 9" that 74 rancheros had with 460s? opened? posi? thanx
If you're really lucky, then that 9" you found MIGHT have 3.25:1 gears in it. But, depending on what part of the country you live in, it could have 2.50s, 2.75s or 3.00s. 2.50 gears are KINDA rare, but I believe they weren't that uncommon in the midwest. Anything 3.50 and numerically higher were only found in the pickup trucks by the '70s.
And this is a little OT, but I'm hoping someone with more differential knowledge than me can answer something. Anyway, 22 years or so ago I had a '73 LTD with an integral differential. I was young and naive, but I always thought it was an 8.8" due to the shape of the cover. Since then I've read bits and pieces on the 8.7" (which, if memory serves, was actually 8.725", and the 8.8" is actually 8.875"). Guess my question is: were they the basically the same rear end, just with a different ring gear?
ok not bad i just came from messing around with it, it still had the tag on it, and yeah its a 9" with a 2.75 gears and a locker(yeah), its got its traction bars and everything, besides changing the ring and pinnion (going to a 3.50 ratio) what else should i change on a 9" that hasnt been used in a couple of years but ran perfectly when it was used?
Well, since you're gonna be taking it apart to change the ring and pinion, I think you might as well get some new clutches and steels and rebuild the Traction-Lok. It'd be a bugger if you replaced the gears, only to find out you had a burnt-out diff.
You COULD change the carrier and pinion bearings, but I think that's overkill at this point.
Traction bars on a '74 Ranchero rear axle? Care to share pics?
Sure ill upload it as soon as i can, yeah wierd huh, actually one is missing but the other one goes besides where the shoker goes and into somewhere in the car chasis, and it also has a stabilizer bar, my 8" had none of these so im not even sure how to adapt them, the car came with a 460 so maybe that has something to do with it, im reading you have a similar setup on your 75 torino, what diff so you have?
