My Torino originally had a 3.00:1 open-diff 9"...right now it's a 3.50 Trac-Lok.
I think that on your Mustang, once you get the 9" axle under the car, your best bet might be to get a pair of slapper bars and call it good for a while. I'm not saying that the Ranchero sway bar won't fit under the Mustang, since those weren't little cars, but the Torinos were bigger by far!
The 8.8 inch is a different design than the 8.7. I know they sound similar, but they
aren't. The 7.5 inch that the 8.8 developed from is also different than the 7.5 used
in Falcons and early Mavericks.
Thanks for the info, 78ltd. IIRC, the shape of the diff cover in my old '73 LTD looked a lot like the 8.8"...but I was 16 when I had it, and that was over 20 years ago. Reckon my memory ain't what it used to be!
Ok, i opened the 9". It still has the stock 2.75 ratio, it seams intact along with the locker. I have 31 spline axles (yeah), oh and these drum brakes are huge, the only down side that i could see was that my tires will probably stick out the fenders cuz the 9" is like 4" or more longer than the 8"....
ive read that transmitions with a stock locke requirer some special oil, what oil should i use???
Well, limited-slip diffs don't use "special" oil, per se, but they DO need what's called "friction modifier" added to the gear lube. Basically this stuff prevents the clutches from chattering against the steels, and wearing prematurely.
I've noticed a lot of gear lubes claim to contain the friction modifier from the factory, so you may be able to get away with not needing the extra bottle of modifier (it's only a couple ounces). But if it ends up you DO need the little bottle of modifier, do yourself a favor and take a big whiff of it when you open it...stuff is AWESOME! Back in my single days I used to wear it as cologne...drove the women WILD!
OK, seriously...don't do that. It's some nasty-smelling crap...
Pat
So what oil thickness do you guys recomend?
Oh ive also seen some guys here drill holes on the drum brakes covers, i guess this gives better ventilation, is it recomended? is there specific places (patterns) where the holes should be drilled?
