Hey guys i know my 7.3 well but 6.0 i know nuttin!!!! My dad called me last night and said his pick up died. He started it to move it out of the way and made it fifty yards and just died. It is an 03 bone stock f 250. He said it cranks over fast but no hint of wanting to fire. Thank you in advance
Someone needs to do a little more troubleshooting so we can get some more information.
- Are the fuel filters OEM filters and were they changed at proper intervals?
- Any DTC's (may not show a CEL, but may have DTC's)?
- Is fuel getting to the upper filter bowl?
- Any smoke when it was driveable?
- Any vibration or shuddering or hesitation as warning signs before dieing?
- Any oil leaks in the back of the engine, around sensors?
- It cranks fast, but have the batteries been load tested - just because?
well he said it just died like you shut the key off as for filters was serviced at ford a week ago, no cel, dunno what DTC is?, he is gone trucking so cant check upper bowl no vibration shuddering or hesitation, back of motor is dry as far as he can remember, no load test but he said they arent that old, so now what?
The fuel pump could be bad - so he needs to check the upper filter bowl to see if it is filling when cranking.
The FICM (Fuel Injection Control Module) could be bad - this is one reason I asked about DTC's (Diagnostic Trouble Codes).
Borrowing a code reader at an auto parts store can get you a list of codes if there are any. Post them here and folks can interpret them.
PCM (drivers side fender behind the battery) and FICM (drivers side valve cover) have been known to have wire chaffing which has caused trucks to not start. Check wiring and harnesses for chaffing.
ICP sensors and wiring harnesses are also notorious for going out on the 2003 trucks.
Bad IPR sensors have also been known to cause no-start conditions.
The High Pressure Oil Pump could have failed. This would mean no oil pressure to actuate the injectors.
I would still load test the batteries even if they are relatively new - just to eliminate a possibility.
So many possibilities - this is why all the questions. I doubt anyone can give you a definite answer at this point.
You can look all these up in the Tech Folder section by calling up the 6.0L Bible and searching these out. The tech folder also has links to the 2003 service manual. Also, the Forum has a search feature if you are unsatisfied with what I have posted.
