Military Help

I need some help. How do you deal with a child that you brought into this world watch him grow into a fine young man, graduate High School then join the join the Army go to war then come home and he says he is fine and for a while he is then you get a call out of the blue that he is self mutilation and wants to commit suicide cause he can't handle things and his Superiors won't do anything. We had to call the MP and have our son taken to the hospital.

HELP

How do you deal with him? Support him and listen to him. He'll come out of this "funk" before to long. As for his superiors? No sure on that one. What do you want them to do? Sometimes superiors don't understand.

When I was a Squad Leader I just had a "deal with it and move forward" attitude. I guess I was just expecting my soldiers to be strong minded like myself. I realize now with the current kids in the military most are not strong willed and/or minded. I don't know if it has to do with the attitudes of the kids that grew up in the 90's and early 00's or not.

I'll pray for your son tonight.

It sounds to me that you have started in the right direction by getting him to a doctor. If it were my kid...I would be all over anyone and everyone who is in his chain of command. Of course...this is probably easier said than done.

Have you given any thought to a talking to a local veterans agent or VFW Post for advice??? I would also contact the Senator and Congressperson for my area!!!

Good luck...I'll keep a good thought for your sons successful recovery...and for your success in helping him!!!

I'm dealing with depression now that I am a civilian and I am getting help for it. I'm on a certain med that really helps. It balances me out. My doctor told me that I may be on it for the rest of my life. It's a non-narcotic so I feel safe with it.

Does depression run in your family?

Thank you Ken,but I don't think it would do any good to complain about chain of command. I wouldn't know what to say to our Congresswoman.

You'd be surprised at the resources the Congresswomans' office has...give them a call...tell them your situation...and get their advice!!!!

As far as chain of command...I would think that you would be able to discuss his situation with someone. You're not complaining about the chain of command...you're just trying to find the right people to solicit advise from.

Cliff,

I cover Ft Riley in my regular service area, I make it up there usually every other week or so, if you like, PM me, and let me know if I can do anything to help.
If it help, Husker is also nearby and U are part of the Ford Family, so let him know family is nearby, and we would be glad to help. Heck if he needs someone to hang with, or talk with, i can give you my number.. Us Ks guys can take him 4 wheeling, it will be a month before he can get the smile off of his face.

I would definitly contact the chain of command. They should at least be looking for warning signs from other troops. I never really took to the idea of suicide, but I always deal with the why him and not me thoughts. My friends help me through my tough times, but thats because I let them know about it. Friends will have to step up and help him. Maybe contact some of his friends back home. I wouldnt tell them the whole situation, just tell them he needs thier help.
