Service engine soon ?

..............Coming home from store , truck misses , engine dies and service engine soon light comes on ! Restart and make it home , but service engine soon light does NOT come back on ; so did it throw a code when , IT , did come on ? Wondering if the tech will find anything if he runs a scan ? I can't afford to just start replacing parts . , thanks

I agree with Glenn and Ron, had that problem also, mostly on startup and getting about a mile or so and it just quit but would start up again. CPS.

My truck did the same thing when I first bought it. Previous owner warned me about it but said he could never find the problem.

Turned out to be what everyone else has said.

CPS.

Here's the instructions on how to change. Takes ten minutes.

Welcome to guzzle's CPS R&R Web Page

It also could the a "loose" under the valve cover piece of junk connector.. My 99 acted the same way.. If you get your codes read (p1316) it will tell you.. but the scanner has to be compatible with our PSD.. (autozone will not work). Or you can ohm check the connector pins on top of the valve cover prior to pulling them.. (the gaskets are reusable). I just pushed the connector together and made a shim to fit behind the plastic lock tabs (which warp).. fix cost = $0.

.......................Yes !! Ford changed the CPS under recall back in Dec'07 . It kept dying every so often , so I purchased a 'black cps' from O'Reillys and put it in back in march . I suppose it could be the CPS , but today was the first time the SES light came on . I don't have a code reader so it maybe cheaper to just order another CPS from someone . I'm also thinking I need to check the wiring harness(es) for shorts as once I take it too someone it is going to start costing $$$ . I don't want too become an indentured servant too Master Card , again , if at all possible . I'm very good at basic maintenance , changing batteries , alternators , starters and I can DISassemble just about anything ; I just have a hard time remembering how things go back together ,lol. , thanks , rb
