Ive got a 99 f150 with a 4.2 v6 with 136,000 on it and its 2x4.... I recently have noticed my truck leaking oil and it is all under the chassis and the fire wall! I work at NAPA and i am pretty mechanicly inclined on things but this one is out of my leauge! I crawled underneath and it looks like the front seal has gone bad it is dripping right behind where the crankshaft comes out to spin the harmonic balancer! Anyways i was wondering if the front seal can be replaced just from the front or will i have to crack open the front of the engine to get back to it????
And second of all my check engine light has come on and it reads bank 1 and bank 2 are running lean! Most of the time the O2 sensor would be replaced and i have done so on both sides and i recently just replaced my MAF sensor and replaced plugs and wires! I know in some cases a hose could be leaking and the would throw my engine light on with those code readings but i have know where to beging???
i had a 93 ranger once and had the front seal replaced they did it in a day at the shop i know this is not apples to apples but couldn;t be much different, and as far as the check engine light the best thing i ever did was pull the bulb out. i bet i spent over $1000 trying to fix what the computer was saying something about the emissions control system. ended up being a broken wire ha ha thats the damn ford garage for ya where i'm from n e way good luck
Once you get the harmonic balancer/front pulley off the crank's front seal is right there. However the front of the pan gasket is extremely close & another suspect for such a oil leak. Did you try to snug, not over tighten, the oil pan bolts?
Not sure what you mean "it reads bank 1 and bank 2 are running lean"? That would cover all 6 cylinders, presume you meant #1 & #2 cylinders read via Fault Code reader? Fuel injectors are extremely reliable, but they do occasionally develop deposits that can reduce their capacity. Many people swear by additives like Chevron's Techron that can often dissolve away any crap that forms on the working ends of injectors. Injectors are fairly easy to pull out to inspect.
No i havent touched the oil pan so the bolts wouldnt be over tightened... I assume its the front seal since it is coming from behing the front pulley or harmonic balancer! So if im understanding right i wont have to have the front cracked open to replace the seal??? Does anyone have any idea how much a job like this would run??? Thanks for the help!
I have a 99 f150 4.2 v6 with 136,000 4x2 automatic! I my question is im trying to replace the gasket on the oil pan and everything i read says i have to lift the motor why is that??? Isnt there a way i can get it off with out lifting it??? It makes no sense to me!
I didn't suggest that you had "touched" or over tightened the pan bolts.

I'd suggested a 2nd possible source of a leak. The pan contact is very close & it can be hard to see behind the crank pulley. Its quick & easy to check the pan bolts for tightness, I warned not to over tighten.
My last FORD had been professionally diagnosed as needing an expensive rear seal replacement, a major factor in the previous owner's decision to sell. I discovered it was only a pan gasket problem that I quickly & easily fixed. 10 years & over 100K later the rear seal has never been touched.
I'd also suggest that you consider replacing the harmonic balancer, since soaking in oil will often soften & swell the rubber.
