Question regarding calculated load value?

My check engine light on my 1997 Crown Victoria 4.6L engine is coming on and staying on with lean sensors Bank1 and Bank2. It seems to have good vacuum. The only reading that is out of the norm is the calculated load value. The oxygen sensors and fuel mixture seem correct. The engine has 120k miles on it and I recently replaced the idle air controller thinking this could be the problem. Does anyone have a good explanation about what would cause a high calculated load value reading of about 40% at idle where it should be about 20% at idle. I was thinking maybe the intake manifold was crapped up with residue. Other than utilization of the engine capacity I don't know how calculated load value is derived. I had a friend in the past with a clogged air filter that showed a similar high load value, but that is not my problem.

I haven't seen this topic discussed in the forum.

It might not help too much but take a look at http://www.obd2crazy.com/techdata.html and http://www.mustangworks.com/articles...tionBlues.html.
I would guess that you maybe have a vacuum leak or dirty MAF sensor.

Good explanation at the mustang site

Thanks, I assume its ok to use electrical cleaner to clean a MAF sensor or is it impossible? Since I can measure the RPM accurately and the volume of the engine is supposed to be 4.6L does anyone have confidence on a formula to calculate the air flow. I can read the air flow as well which would give me the capability to know if it is off or not.

Sounds like the MAF is dirty ...

Brake cleaner, electrical cleaner, anything is OK.

To get the MAF sensor out of the housing (do NOT clean it in the housing with all the tubing connected), there are anti-tamper torx screws holding it in (the ones with the pin in the center). Go to an autoparts store you should be able to get the right torx bit.

If you really want to calculate what the flow should be, think of it this way: The volumetric efficiency at wide-open-throttle is only going to be 80-90%, so take 80% of the volume of the 4.6L and figure it out Then, see if you see near the same values at wide-open-throttle (under load).

But, like I said, easier to clean it.
