3 Qs

1. What is an injector service?

2. Is it worth doing?

3. Can I do it myself (i.e. hard, time consuming, special tools)?

The best and easiest one I have ever seen was done at a Ford dealer on my old truck. They pulled the fuel pump fuse, attached a canister to the fuel rail, and then started and ran the motor off the canister until it died.. which was about 15min or so. This made a noticable difference in the way the truck ran and the motor idled smoother, so to me that says it was worth the cost... which I can't remember. If you can get this type of cleaner I don't see why it couldn't be a DIY thing. It takes a concentrated cleaner to clean fuel deposits out of injectors so I don't see fuel additives doing as well.

I have recently bench cleaned some 19lb injectors I have, soaked them in carb cleaner overnight, and then blew some more through them with compressed air as they were electrically cycled with a little jig I made. This too produced noticably improvements in the spray pattern from these injectors, so I anticipate they will perform better once installed. Obviously to do this you have to remove them from the motor, I already had then out so it wasn't too much work.

When you remove them do you put new gaskets or o-rings in? How are they sealed? I've never seen one.

Yeah.. they have O-rings around the top and bottom, and a fine mesh filter in the top. You can buy kits to replace all these parts as the O-rings often get chewed up during installation/removel and will disolve in some solvents.

What is the purpose of the jig you made? In other words, what do you mean by electrically cycling? BTW, I just read this:

Fuel Injection Service, Not Just Cleaning

What do you think about all of that?

An injector is a just a specialized solenoid. To get the cleaning solution through the injector it has to be activated(opened), so I built a small jig that applies 12v through a momentary contact switch to the injector electrical connection. They are not designed to be held open for long periods so it's not wise to just apply power and lock them open, solenoid failure may occur.

P.S. Here's a guy with a web page on this...
