A/C clutch cycling

Hi All:

I've got a 2001 4L. The air conditioner clutch cycles a couple of times a minute when I have A/C running. I checked with the dealer and he advises this is normal. The owner's manual (yes, I do read such things!) also says cycling is normal--apparently to improve the gas mileage.

This constant cycling of the clutch can't be a good thing. What has been the experience? Do the clutches/compressor have to be replaced more often?

Thanks for any thoughts.

It is normal and the compressors have been designed to handle it.
Compressors have been doing this for 15 to 20 years now.

The older ones use a temp sensor in the heater/ac box that cycles the compressor and it has adjustments for start and stop temps and this controls the degree of cycling that happens at the compressor. Mine happens only when it's fully cold and not while getting down to the cold temps. It was designed to prevent icing in the heater/ac box.

Several times per min seems too high and I'd check with some non dealers or others that have the same system. I don't trust dealers all the time, sometimes they just don't know and other times they just don't want to do the work.

I'd check the freon and compressor oil level or have a seperate ac shop look at it.

OK, guys, thanks for the info. Since I've posted the question I took the truck out for a 200 mile spin and found the clutch appears to have settled down and is not cycling so much.

I've got the same problem with my 2000 explorer- it seems to have only recently started doing this and the constant clicking sound is driving me crazy- the dealer replaced the a/c compressor recycling switch and tested the system, but it still seems to cycle on & off every 15-30 seconds WHEN i can hear it- the responses indicate this is normal, but i hadn't noticed this in the prior 10 months (although i live in florida, which may have some affect)-
Please pass along any advice-
thanks-
mike
