a/c clutch cycling on and off

I have a 94 with a/c and it quit cooling. The compressor was not coming on. I added freon(about half a can) and it seemed to start working(it measured low on freon prior to my adding some). Now the clutch comes on about every 20 seconds and only stays engaged for about 3 or 4 seconds and then goes off for another 20 seconds. The pressure guage needle jumps from 25(normal) to 45(high) lbs in relation to the clutch cycling. What could be wrong? The vehicle came with the new refrigerant.

Try adding some more refrigerant. It should short cycle and the as you get more in the system, it will run longer on each cycle. Finally, it will run normal. Watch your guages and don't let the pressures get too high. Your high pressure switch may be bad, it's over on the right side next to the heater case. It can be changed without losing the refrig.
