Ok it's a '97 F-350 460, SRW, E4OD, BW 1356.
I know it's not an IDI and newer than '94 but since it's a drivetrain problem I thought you guys could pretend it's an IDI. LOL
I've never really checked out the 4wd. since I've owned it. The 4x4 light came on so I didn't really worry about it.
I haven't checked low-range but in high range it doesn't actually get power to the front axle. The hubs are working as the front axles are turning at the knuckles.
I put 2 old bent-up wheels (no tires) on the back axle to get a really low profile as I was pulling a service bed/box off of it and I didn't want to lift it any higher than necessary. The back "wheels" gave me all of my propulsion, none from the frontend.
I haven't checked the yoke yet to see if it snapped, as I saw a Chevy do, and I haven't checked to see if the front driveshaft is getting power so this post may be premature but have you guys had/seen this problem.
While we're at it the same x-case behind the ZF-5 speed in my '94 IDI won't go into low range. It also "rattles" through the "stick" going down the highway.
Man, I need to go back to NP205s! They get to where they rattle through the stick some too, but at least they work all the time.
Does it have the vacuum operated hubs or manual hubs on the front axle?
My first guess would be a lockout not engaging.
There have been several posts about the bracket breaking on the 1356 transfer case shifter.
If yours is cracked, it might not be giving the shift rod enough stroke.
I'll have to check into it some more. The new (old) IDI not starting today kinda side-lined my other plans.
I didn't even know they made vacuum frontends on/for these trucks.
Both of mine have hubs and D60s. I know the '94 doesn't have any vacuum crap, I'm pretty sure the '97 doesn't either.
When my 88 got back from the tranny shop when you pushed the stick forward it showed 4x4 and back one notch the light went off. i took it back to the shop and they said they fixed, all they really did was unplug the wire, but I figured it was an electrical problem, until one day I was under it and grabbed the front driveshaft and it wouldn't turn, so it was in 4x4. Turns out they had put the shifter linkage on upside down. Where it connects to is oval shaped so it will go on two different ways, which is better than circle shaped where it will go on any which way. So all they way forward was in 4x4 and one notch back was 2 wheel drive and it wouldn't go to low range at all. It took me forever to figure out how to fix that.

Dave,
I didn't read your post close enough the first time. You were pretty much dead on about the "lock-out" not being engaged as it was engaged but there's something wrong with it. The driveshaft is just spinning the spider gears.

That sounds EXACTLY like my problem. About 5K mi. before I bought it it had a clutch installed. The PO told me the 4wd worked great in high and low-range. I just assumed he lied to me but he may have never put it in 4wd or low-range after he got it back from the shop. He replaced this truck with a SuperDuty powerstroke so he may not have used 4wd. The pieces of the puzzle kind of fit together.
You might have just saved ME all of the hours YOU spent figuring yours out!
Thanks in advance if it turns out to be this problem.
Mine's kinda finnicky going into 4-Lo...I think the linkage is a bit sticky. I messed around with it last weekend and sprayed some WD40 on it and it seemed to work better after that.
you may have to push down on your shifter stick then pull back for 4low.
Um....I...uh....kinda.....like.......broke my own rule and didn't read the owners manual before I started pushin' buttons and pullin' levers or I might have read that you have to push down on the shifter to select low range.
Honestly I always read the owners manual when I get a rig (if it had one, if not I go to the wrecking yard and find one).
The x-case is a little "fidgity" to shift in and out of low-range but if I'da' pulled my head out of my @$$ long enought to read the directions it would have been easier!
Luckily I didn't spend hours trying to fix a non-existing problem.
I think I heard once "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"!!!
i figured that might be it, one of my friends has a 95 F150 and you have to do that so i figured the year you got just might be the same.
BTW i dont think its a BW1356. its a BW but the number is a little different cant think of it off hand.. its 13??
