My A/C on my '90 1/2 ton works but it will only work for a while than it will blow air that isn't cool at all. I can wait 5 minutes and turn the A/C back on and it will cool for a little bit longet than it stops working again. This continues untill I stop driving. When it does work the air that comes out isn't cold but cool. At first I thought I needed a recharge but now im not really sure what is wrong. Maybe a bad clutch. I have the R-12 refrigerant right? If I need a recharge can I still get the R-12 or do I have to convert to R-134a? Somewere i read that if you just need your freon to be topped off you don't have to convert to the R-134a. If someone can help here I would be very thankfull!!
Perhaps you evaporator is icing over.
Thus it cools untill enoug water condenses from the air and freezes over evap to prevent air flowing thru and getting cool.
Then you shut off for awhile and ice melts some and you agin get cold air for a few minutes.
Many systems have an antiicing switch to prevent evaporator from getting cold enough to ice over. If yours has one maybe it is a bad.
Also check the drain that dump condensed water out of evaporator box it may be plugged.
