It Rumbles

Hello All -

I just purchased a 2006 Explorer 2WD with 4.6 V-8. It has a low rumble from the rear when decelerating from about 60 MPH down to about 45 MPH. I never hear it when accelerating through that range or during any driving below about 50 MPH. I took it to dealer and he said it was a loose rear washer pump. Well, that wasn't the fix and it sure sounds like differential or maybe U joint to me. I also had all four tires balanced in case the vibration was coming from there but that didn't work either. Any thoughts?

Mac

What I found

Well, folks I got no response on this question so I assume y'all are tired of answering questions from poorly educated newbies. But I took the vehicle to Ford service and the local 'differential expert' rode with me. He says the problem is not differential or wheel bearings, that these problems are noted mostly with older Explorer models. His diagnosis is that the rumble on deceleration is related to the driveline, probably U-joints. He said that the drivelines on these later Explorers are so sensitive to damage that they cannot even be left hanging when one U-joint is disconnected. They must be completely removed and laid on the floor. And a hit from BFR or anything is lethal.

So new driveline is on order and we'll have installed in the next couple of days. Thought this might be of interest for owners of newer Explorers with strange sounds from the rear. Apparently all the complaints we hear of rear diff problems or wheel bearing problems are not as applicable to us.

There aren't a lot of pros that post in here so what you get is mostly 'tribal knowledge'. You're adding to that knowledge base with your followups. Thanks, let us know how the new driveline works out.

not to argue with your mechanic, but u-joints normally make more noise during acceleration., and they dont know if your going 45 MPH or 65 MPH. Hope for the best, but thats a new one on me. rr is right, the 2006 has few if any rear end problems, especially 2 wheel drive. Guys on here will tell you waht they know, or relate to experience. Experience with problems on 2006 is minimal.

It worked

Well, guys - the new driveline came in this morning and the Ford Service guys installed it. No more vibration or rumble at any speed, accelerating or decelerating. I never saw the driveline but I understand that there's some kind of balancing device and that it is segmented (I dunno - just what I was told). Again, this is an '06 2WD unit.

So take heart, you owners of rumbling newer Explorers. The problem might be easier to fix than we feared after reading all the posts on rear diff and wheel bearing probs.
