Rattling Camry

My friend dropped off his 97 Toyota Camry. The motor(4 banger w/160k) makes a rattling noise. In neutral it will rattle all the way up to 4k rpm and will slowly disappate if you hold the throttle steady. When driving it will only rattle for the last 2-3 seconds right before the tranny(auto) shifts. It doesn't matter what rpm it shifts at either. The noise sounds similar to pre-ignition, but I've never know a car to ping without a load as I have had pinging issues with both of my mustangs.

I'd say piston slap or shot rod bearings. Shot main bearings will usually be a very load clanking with screeching

Most Toyotas do not have hydraulic lifters. Could it just need a valve adjustment?

To top it off I was told they recently ran it pretty low on oil. My sister lives down the street from them and she said it was 3.5 quarts low. She added the oil after the noise had started, so I think that might have something to do with it.
