I have a '97 E-350 5.4L with 162k, and am having issues with an intermittent noise coming from the engine. The noise typically happens while the van is idling in drive, but not moving. It is a high pitched squeak that originates under the hood but can be heard through the exhaust as it shakes on its hangers. When the noise occurs, it brings the RPM's down by what I would guess 3-400 (no tach). It last for 1-2 seconds before going away, with the engine coming back up to a normal idle. I initially thought it was A/C related, but it happens with the A/C on and off. The van threw a belt a month or so ago, and it has been replaced. All of the pulleys looked okay when I changed the belt. I'm almost certain it has to be one of the accessories driven by the belt, as it sounds like a belt squeak and brings the revs down. Any suggestions?

It sounds like your belt is slipping. This would explain the rpm drop, and the noise you described is consistent with this. Why it only occurs at idle when your driving could be a number of reasons, less tension on the belt(?) etc.
I would start by getting a can of belt dressing from any autoparts store, truck stops usually have it too. It will condition your belt and may eliminate the problem. Belt dressing also has a tendancy to cause squeaking when you first apply it but it will go away. I would start with that and if it doesn't work look into adjusting the tension on your belt tensioner, not sure how this is done but maybe someone else has done this before. If you just had the belt replaced maybe you could take it back to the shop where you had it done and ask them to maybe tighten the tension arm for you?
Thanks for the suggestions. I changed the belt myself, as I do all of my own work (except transmissions ). The automatic tensioner felt perfectly fine to me. Why do you think that the belt slipping would cause the RPM drop?
