I have a 1984 Ford F-150 XL. When I turn the air conditioning on in the cab, the compressor does not engage. What could the problem be and how could I fix it? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Speaking generally about car a/c systems although I am pretty sure your truck works like this...
There is more than one possibility but a likely candidate is that it is just low on freon. The system uses a pressure switch to cycle the compressor on and off under normal condition, it ususally cycles pretty frequently even when everythig is working right. Well the system can be low enough on freon where the low pressure switch just doesn't ever make at all, the switch closes on a rise in pressure and starts the compressor. Good luck I hope this helps.
Look for the low pressure switch on the receiver/dryer. With the motor running and the air conditioning turned on jump across the terminals to close the circut and see if the magnetic clutch engages. If it does engage then the problem is either a bad switch or a low charge. DO NOT LET IT RUN LIKE THIS LONGER THAN TO SEE IF THE CLUTCH ENGAGES OR THE COMPRESSOR WILL BE TOAST. If it does not engage i would suspect the magnetic clutch on the a/c compressor although some systems use more than one safety switch (ie superheat switch, low pressure switch, cycling switch) i think all ford uses is that one.

This test presumes that there is voltage at the switch.
It may be as simple as a fuse or fusible link.
Verify voltage before declaring anything toast.
Also, I don't know about your's, but my clutch has a relay that fires it up.
