Ford AC Compressors

Ford AC Compressors
I replaced the AC compressor in my 94 Ford Probe at 40K miles.
Now they want to replace the AC compressor on my 97 Explorer at 70K.
From some investigating, Ford uses a cheap compressor and many of them leak. For me, 2 needed replacement.
I think this is a Service Department fraud.
Does anyone have simular experience to offer ?

I can't really answer your question directly, but the guys at this web site can:

The Ford FS10 or FX10 depending was noted for 'black death' when the teflon on the pistons wore off, and combined with the oil to form black gunk throughout the system. FIX? replace compressor, and most other parts forward of the firewall, such as condenser, accumulator and any hose that had a muffler or orifice in it. I think that leaves 1 hose, the output from the compressor... Might as well do 'em all at that point.
You can also check out http://www.aircondition.com/ and go the the archives to see what kinds of things are common to your model.
