Question Shift column-Auto

I have 68 F100 2wd auto and I need to replace the shift column collar. Has anybody replaced this? I have a friend that ordered one for his 74 F100 and it did fit correctly. So he put in a floor shift instead of trying to find another column. If there are still availbe from Ford that would be great.

1961/77 A/T shift collar

Ford replaced the A/T shift collar used 1961/72 with the type used in 1973/77. It fits fine, but it's a little different.

The shift pointer is no longer made as part of the collar like the original. The 1973/77 collar has a rectangular cutout, and into that slides a plastic shift pointer, which comes with the collar kit.

D5TZ7228A .. Shift Collar Kit / Fits: 1961/77 F100/350

MSRP: $55.57 / ftepartsguy.com price: $40.01

I did an internet search for the Ford original..no dealer or obsolete parts seller has any. You may find one in a junkyard, but it prolly won't be one bit better than yours.

At one time, NAPA sold two replacement shift collars, one for the 3 speed M/T, one for the A/T...they looked identical to the originals.

But make sure you get the type for the A/T. The Ford part number for the A/T original: C9TZ-7228-A which replaced C8TZ-7228-A which replaced C5TZ-7228-B.

If your friend bought a shift collar for his truck, and it "did fit correctly," why did he change to a floor shift?

Did you mean to say it didn't fit correctly?

Here's what the problem may have been...the stick shift collar looks similar, but it won't fit any A/T equipped truck!
